My son is my only child. Growing up, I barely knew my paternal grandparents. That grandmother was only interested in her daughter’s daughter - my memory of her is the two of them whispering to each other when I was in the room - and then she and my grandfather moved a thousand miles away when I was 8. My son just had his second child, and I’m determined to be in my grandchildren’s lives. Isn’t easy, though, because my son’s mother-in-law does her best to take over. She literally pushed me away when I was helping my granddaughter remove the paper from her 2nd birthday cupcake!

Oh Dee, I am so sorry to read about the challenges of being a grandparent. It is so sad that someone would push away another person like that. I hope you continue to remain strong and optimistic about being a part of your grandchildren’s lives. Thank you for sharing your story and for reading this piece. I appreciate it very much, and apologize for the very very late response.

This is so beautiful! My only grandparents live 4 hours away but they're home does feel so safe and familiar. I hope my girls feel the same about their grandparents when they're older - my husband and my parents are wonderful grandparents who are always willing to be there 💛
