These three stories are true. They happened to me while awake and in a dream. Halloween is approaching — read if you dare.

Black Narcissus [Powell & Pressburger, 1947]
  • Feeling heavy like an elephant sinking into the couch and the cooling sheets that mother has carefully placed to allow the aching hot body to feel relief. Sinking deeper than my body allows so that sinews and consciousness are below everything else above. Upside is down and it is impossible to know if the belly touches the sheets — or is it the back? Perhaps the body is rotating around its polar axis while endlessly seeking a comfortable position? Perhaps the nerves have finally reached a dead end? Perhaps the body is truly floating? A heavy elephant with an 8-year-old girl’s brain floating in a fever dream.

  • While folding clothes in my childhood room I hear my mother’s voice from the hallway. “Minna!” I walk out to the living room to see her but she is not there. She is, in fact, not even home. Half an hour later her car pulls up on the yard. I’m relieved and curious!

  • The white-haired man is clad in a white full-length gown, pale and somber with his eyes open and face swollen and expressionless. He is floating, face-to-face, one meter above me and I cannot move or speak. This is dream paralysis.

A Subliminal Suggestion

A dream I had several times when I was young has stayed with me. I would lay in my bed and I was aware of someone coming up the stairs. I couldn’t move my body though I could my eyes. I would see an Indian Chief (someone akin to sitting bull, definitely a North American plains Indian) slowly float to the end of my bed, or to either side, that usually differed. He would put his arms out over me and I would begin to float up, still unable to move. His details what I can remember of them were that he was pale whit(ish). Every part, including his clothing. Just as if he was doused in milk. Anyways, I would be under his control floating like a wood board. He would lead me beyond my bed and down the hall. Just before the steps I would come to and wake up. I did have pretty bad asthma then, and it would be no surprise if I had difficulty breathing during those dreams. But always always the same one. Strange.

I once woke up in the middle of the night and there was an old bald man in a red farmer's flannel shirt watching me. I wanted to scream when I opened my eyes, but nothing came out of my mouth. I stared at hım in the darkness until he slowly stared to fade away backwards and finally dissappeared. 🤯 True story
