A space opera for all you sci-fi fans who love Ripley and Sarah Connor and all the strong female leads in action movies.
A sci-fi space opera-ish adventure distilled through a fast paced action meets romance and pulp. It has all the good stuff!
This book is like that TV-series you binge. It's a combo of all the sci-fi movies you’ve seen, mixed with romance and futuristic technology we barely understand, and characters you end up rooting for!
Yes, there are those beeping sounds you always hear in a good space movie. And the blinking lights and
Backstory:
Aubade sat in a folder for years. Literally. I have versions of Aubade from 2006. So it’s been with me a looong time. When I began writing on Substack I decided to experiment with publishing Aubade as a serial. There was a lot of discussion on Notes about the good and bad of running serials on Substack (this topic pops up every two months roughly). Everyone was excited and hopeful and thought it would bring in lots of readers.
I was more skeptical and also early on Substack. But I have fewer readers. Since I’ve always had a soft spot for this space story, I kept going. I edited each original chapter and published a total of 20 updated chapters here. They’re now behind a paywall for subscribers.
The most frequent feedback I got for my serial here on Substack was:
“Publish Aubade as a novel and I’ll buy it!”
I listened to you and here is the book in full-length novel format for your reading pleasure!
This is an independent publication. A one woman show. A zero budget project.
My pet project is now available in paperback and Kindle. And if you have KindleUnlimited you can read it for free!
This is what I originally wrote about Aubade when I first began publishing it as a serial here on Substack:
Aubade is the story I can’t let go of. Every now and then I return to it, read through the whole thing, make a few changes, and then put it back in stasis. The reason I keep returning to this story is because I adore space adventures with strong female leads. I’ve had fun building a complex adventure. A story I personally would love to read or watch on the big screen. Do you know what I mean? Do you have one of these stasis stories too? Today I’m sharing with you the opening of Aubade. Let’s give it some air and see what you think. Would you like to read the rest of this story as a serial? After all, what good does a story do in stasis?
Thank you all for always being so supportive of my crazy writing projects. You energize me.
Thank you to all who have been following along the Aubade serial here on Cabinet of Curiosities. I have no idea how many have followed along all the way, but every once in a while someone leaves a comment or a like, and it’s been huge motivator.
Thank you to all my Soaring Twenties Social Club peeps! Being part of STSC has enabled me to be more self-disciplined and productive as a writer, and also less hesitant to just go for it. Some might call that foolish, but I figure life's too short. I spent too many years not daring to do anything for fear of not producing a perfect product. Join us! We’re friendly and fun!
It’s energizing and liberating to surf out on the edge of the wave and wiggle the toes a bit, you know? Isn’t that what life’s all about? Doing things. Experiencing. Publishing a story that’s hung out in a folder for twenty years. Things like that.
I need your help!
Please share and shill my book on your own channels, Notes and social media. Oh, and hopefully you might want to grab a copy of Aubade for your own reading pleasure. I appreciate your support and kindness.
Let's see if this baby floats or sinks! Want to know the truth? This is probably my declaration of love for all sci-fi and action movies I’ve seen throughout the years — all distilled through a strangely romantic and perhaps pulpy lens.
Got my copy!
That’s amazing. But I have to ask, how long did the serial last? Was it weekly chapters?
