Stories from the near future
My self-publishing journey
I write stories from the near future.
The characters share their stories with me, and so far I have collected them for you into two anthologies and one full length novel.
Several of my readers have told me that my anthologies are perfect travel reading material. Another reader told me the short stories help her get back into reading paper books because she is a self-professed “slow reader”. Yet another reader said this was the first time he has truly read, and enjoyed reading, science fiction because “it didn’t feel like science fiction.”
Take a look at my bookshelf and consider grabbing a copy for yourself and a friend. All my books are available on Amazon worldwide. If you have KindleUnlimited you can read some of the books for free.
NO END CODE
Four stories from the near future. My first anthology and leap into the self-publishing world.
Happy Birthday — First you will read an important birthday greeting to a little girl. Take note in case you need to upload in the near future!
Green Velvet — You’ll be the (perhaps slightly uncomfortable) observer of an unexpectedly sudden and true romance involving the Singularity.
Report from Germany — “Listen” to a time travel trip report from Germany. Wait for it — there are lions!
No End Code — Here you’ll be dragged into a murder investigation in Alaska which might leave you wondering whose side you’d be on if this was you. Perhaps wear a hat when it snows?
No End Code will touch on the following existential questions:
Do you upload before or after your birthday?
What happens when technology begins to twine itself closer and closer to our humanity and refuses to let go?
Where does the human end and the machine begin?
What if there is no end code?
ERRANTE
In the near future AI are hungry to merge with us. They want to feel what it's like to be human.
Here is a sample from one of the six stories from the near future:
I arrived at Errante on Midsummer’s Eve exactly 20 years ago. It’s located on the southernmost tip of Chile on Isla Navarino. I didn’t know a soul, knew very little Spanish and had never set foot on the South American continent before.
Every Midsummer’s Eve since then I write a chronicle by hand, perhaps mostly to keep my arthritis at bay, but also because I miss it. I miss handwriting very much. But that’s besides the point. I’m mind-speaking this one, as best I can. I’m sure things have changed a lot, but the basics for accessible uploading should be there. I’m keeping the frequency as close to 444 Hz as possible.
The point is that I’ve felt a growing urge to tell you about what happened before I came here. Maybe I’m getting old. It does things to you, you know. Being alone and – old. I know, you know nothing of getting old or growing urges, and that’s why I am telling you this now. I think it was Antonio who made me think of it. The idea that maybe someone should talk about what it means to be human. Truly human. The last time I saw him was two years ago. Two years ago was a long time to be alone. Antonio landed his helicopter right there on the lawn, overlooking the bay. Like some freaking astronaut! He even looked like an astronaut! Handsome as hell. He liked my food. Do you understand? He liked my food!
I am free inside the jail that is called Earth. And I love it so so dearly. I’m going to try to upload this to Alina and God willing, perhaps some of you can get out. I know many of you want out. It isn’t easy. If you’re listening to this it means you are looking for a way out and you have found it. Now the question is, will you do something about it.
AUBADE
My first full length novel. Here you can read about how it was born.
You just woke up and find yourself onboard the spaceship Aubade escaping Earth. Forever. Last thing you remember is going to bed. On Earth.
Sara wakes up onboard the interstellar spaceship Aubade and realizes she’s lost everyone and everything she’s ever loved back on Earth. Forever. As she begins to adapt to her new life as the Historian onboard Aubade, she is determined to find out who selected her against her will.
Once the crew of Aubade land on a foreign planet tensions rise and suspicions grow between the defense team and the engineering team. Commander Stapleton recruits her to unravel a crucial situation within the defense database, and despite her lack of expertise, Sara reluctantly agrees to help. As relationships develop and Sara finds out more and more about this mission, she must confront her fears and navigate the complexities of her new life.
A space opera for all you sci-fi fans who love Ripley and Sarah Connor and all the strong female leads in action movies.
A dystopian sci-fi adventure distilled through a strangely romantic and pulpy lens.
This book is like that TV-series you binge. It's a combo of all the sci-fi movies you’ve seen, mixed with romance and futuristic technology we barely understand, and characters you end up rooting for!
Aubade began as a serial here on Substack, and here you can read all about it.
Here is the original serial on Substack complete with the illustrations.
“M. K. Weaving gets better with each book.” [Amazon reviewer]

Aubade sounds great! Adding it to my list on Amazon.
