I recognize her. She very urgently grabs my hand and explains how awful things are. Her friend is in very bad shape. I have no idea who she is talking about.
She pulls me into a huge hall. Here people mingle, shoulder to shoulder, in near darkness. We walk along the perimeter of the hall and I lose hold of her hand. Instead a stranger grabs my hand and continues pulling me along. He smiles and beckons me forward. I laugh an uncomfortable and surprised laughter and say:
"What, another one who wants to hold my hand?"
I'm ushered out a door and onto a large patio and into the balmy Los Angeles night. My friend is there with her husband. She stands in the background and allows him to verbally attack me as soon as he sees me. He simultaneously interrogates me while boasting about his so called successes in business. I am not impressed. I don't respect him and he doesn't trust me. My teflon stare finally shuts him up.
I look at the skyline and see a huge stack of smoke. The fires I assume. Then the smoke stacks suddenly rise and form a thick dark brown mess! Something new has occurred. This is more than fire.
I look straight up and see debris falling. It is going to hit right where I stand. Uncertain of how to move I back up just a little and the metal hits right in front of me. More debris is falling. I want to survive and am surprised by how well I maintain clarity of thought. Without a word I sprint away and leave them there on the balcony. Things are perhaps not that awful after all.
